The Dr. Phillips High School boys varsity basketball team has had the amazing opportunity to travel to Hawaii two times, in 2003 and 2010, to participate in the prestigious Iolani Classic. The Iolani Classic is widely regarded as one of the best high school basketball tournaments in the nation. Every year only 8 teams from 'the mainland' are invited and the field always includes several nationally ranked teams. Every team in the field are state powerhouses. It's an incredible experience for the team. The Panthers have had the opportunity to play the nation's best high school programs in the Iolani and the nation's best individual players. The Panthers played probably the nation's best known program, Oak Hill Academy, both times they played in Hawaii. The 2010 Panthers finished 4th losing only to #1 nationally ranked Oak Hill Academy and #14 nationally ranked (and future New York state champs) Mt. Vernon.
The off-the-court experience of the Iolani Classic is a lifetime learning experience as well. The team took advantage of being in one of the world's most beautiful places to do some site-seeing as well as take in some educational experiences such as touring Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona. Below are some pictures of the wonderful experiences the Panther basketball team had in Hawaii. Enjoy.
